E-mail Setup for Backpacking Around Australia

E-mail Setup for Backpacking Around Australia

Almost everybody these days has an email account and if you already have one you might want to skip this section. Just remember that an email account or two can be a useful tool for storing photos and videos while you're backpacking around Australia (learn more Photos, Videos and Storage). For anyone new to email please read on.

Electronic mail or e-mail is easily one of the most efficient and versatile methods of communication available today. Gaining popularity in the 1990's it grew to become the most widely used application on the internet, ever. Starting off as a simple system for relaying digital messages between two computers it has since been developed into a medium for storing and delivering media around the world.

What is e-mail?

E-mail is the sending and receiving of letters (messages) which have been 'composed' on a computer or in a web browser (morzilla, internet explorer, etc...) using one of the e-mail services available. After the letter has been composed it's 'sent' across the internet to the 'address' of the recipient.

Once composed, you can also 'attach' a number of files (i.e, photos, videos, or other data) to your e-mails for the recipient to 'open' when the e-mail is received in their 'inbox'. To send and receive e-mails you need to have an e-mail account which can be setup in minutes. You can have as many e-mail accounts as you like because there is no limit to how many accounts you're allowed.

How do I get an e-mail account?

To get your own e-mail account you will need to register some details with an account provider (Yahoo!, MSN Hotmail, AIM, GMX, etc...). Most e-mail accounts are free with each one offering their own unique services.

During the registration process you will be asked to nominate a name for the account which will become your e-mail 'address' (i.e, joebloggs@yahoo.com). This address is used to receive e-mails from other people and companies who you provide it to. When you 'compose' and 'send' a letter you use the e-mail address of the person/company you wish to contact so the servers know where to deliver your e-mail to.

Generally the interface (the layout on screen) differs slightly between providers but the basic functions remain the same. If you want to setup a new e-mail account, just follow one of the links below and it will take you straight through to the relevant registration process of that site.

Hot Tips for Backpacking Around Australia Storage space is quite an important factor to consider when choosing which provider to go with. Why? Because you can use an e-mail account to store your media (see section Photos and Videos). The providers Yahoo! Mail and AIM (america online mail) amongst others are each offering accounts with unlimited storage which is ideal for this purpose.

On security

E-mail is a very efficient means of communication but always remember that whatever you include in your e-mails can be read by a third party!! So it's advisable not to transfer any sensitive details via e-mail which may compromise your security. This means bank details, passwords, addresses or any other sensitive data.
